Dominoes

Dominoes is a classic game that dates back to the 12th or 13th century. There are a variety of domino sets used all over the world and a great number of games can be played with them.

These are the rules to play the game in its simplest form with the standard or double-six domino set of 28 tiles.

Setup

  • 1. Shuffle the dominoes face down on the table.
  • 2. Each player draws a certain number of dominoes, depending on the number of players:
    • • For 2 players, each player draws 7 dominoes
    • • For 3 or 4 players, each player draws 5 dominoes
  • 3.The remaining dominoes form the draw pile.

Gameplay

  • 1.The player with the highest double domino (a tile with the same number of dots on both squares) starts the game by placing it in the centre of the table.
  • 2.Players then take turns in a clockwise direction.
  • 3.On your turn, you must place a domino that matches the number of dots on one of the open ends of the domino chain.
  • 4.If you cannot play a domino, you must draw from the draw pile until you can play.
  • 5.The game continues until one player empties their hand or no players can make a move.

End of the game

  • 1. The game ends when one player empties their hand or when no players can make a move.
  • 2. If a player empties their hand, they receive points based on the total number of dots left in their opponents’ hands.
  • 3. If the game ends because no players can make a move, the player with the fewest total dots remaining in their hand wins.

Optional rules

  • 1.Blocking: If a player cannot play a domino and there are no dominoes left in the draw pile, the game is blocked and the player with the fewest total dots in their hand wins.
  • 2.Scoring: Some variations of the game include scoring based on specific patterns or combinations of tiles played.
